My first impression of life on the road as a distribution driver

Most people are still asleep at 2:00 in the morning. Streets are empty, cafés are closed, and the world feels quiet. But for distribution drivers across the Netherlands, the day is already starting.

My name is Catalin and recently I had the opportunity to spend an entire working day with a C category distribution driver to experience firsthand what life on the road is really like. What I experienced gave me a completely different perspective on the daily life of truck drivers and the hard work they put in every day.

After spending a full day on the truck, one thing became very clear to me: distribution driving is demanding work, but it also offers a level of freedom, responsibility, and variety that many jobs simply do not have.

This is what I experienced during a real day on the road.

An early start in Veghel

The evening before, I agreed to meet Ionut - the driver I would join that day - at the Udea base in Veghel at 3:00 a.m. I have to admit, waking up at 2:00 in the morning was not easy. But for drivers like Ionut, this is simply part of the routine. Early starts allow deliveries to happen efficiently before cities become busy and customers open their doors.

When I arrived, Ionut was already there, calm and fully prepared for the day ahead. What immediately stood out to me was his positive attitude and professionalism, despite the early hour. Before leaving, we carefully went through the route planning together.

One thing people often underestimate about transport work is how much organization happens before the truck even leaves the warehouse. Ionut explained:

It quickly became clear that distribution driving is much more than simply driving from A to B. Every day is different, and drivers constantly need to think ahead and adapt.

After receiving my safety equipment - boots, gloves, and a reflective vest - we headed into the warehouse to load the truck.

Inside the warehouse, we loaded roll containers for shops, cafés, and supermarkets across several Dutch cities. Some containers were heavy, others lighter, but everything had to be loaded in the correct order to make the route run smoothly. It is physical work, but it also creates a strong sense of teamwork and responsibility.

What surprised me most was how active and varied the job actually is. You are not sitting still all day. Every stop is different, every customer interaction is different, and every route brings something new.

Once the truck was fully loaded, we were ready to hit the road.

Local supermarkets

Coffee bars

Small businesses

Shops in city centers

Watching Ionut work, I noticed how much independence comes with the job. Drivers are trusted with responsibility, planning, customer contact, and time management throughout the entire day. Driving through narrow streets, organizing deliveries, communicating with customers, and keeping the schedule on track all demand constant attention.

There is also a certain freedom that comes with being on the road. Instead of spending the entire day inside an office, drivers experience different locations, different people, and a constantly changing environment. For people who enjoy variety and being active, that can be a major advantage.

A beautiful morning delivery in Haarlem

One of the highlights of the route was a delivery in the center of Haarlem. While unloading the roll containers early in the morning, we had an amazing view of the city as it slowly woke up. The streets were quiet, the canals looked beautiful, and for a moment I could really appreciate the unique experience of working on the road in the Netherlands.

It made me understand why many drivers genuinely enjoy this profession despite the early mornings and hard work.

A stop I definitely didn’t expect

The most memorable stop of the day came at our final delivery location. We delivered food products to a racing team, where I unexpectedly saw one of the most impressive car collections I have ever seen.

Moments like this are part of what makes transport work so unique. Every day can bring something unexpected, and no route is ever exactly the same.

A whole new level of respect

After completing all deliveries, we headed back to the base. During the drive back, I had the chance to talk more with Ionut about life as a truck driver. What surprised me the most was the endurance and discipline required for this profession. Drivers work long days, stay physically active, and must remain focused throughout the route. But at the same time, the profession also offers:

Variety in daily work

Responsibility

Customer interaction

A strong sense of accomplishment after completing a route

After spending a full day on the truck, I gained a completely new level of respect for professional drivers and the important role they play in everyday life.

Why truck drivers are essential

Without distribution drivers, supermarkets would not receive products, cafés could not operate normally, and businesses would struggle to function. Drivers are one of the key forces that keep the Dutch economy moving every single day.

What impressed me most was not only the hard work itself, but also the dedication and professionalism behind it.

More than just driving

This experience gave me an honest look into the world of distribution transport in the Netherlands.

Yes, the work is demanding. The mornings are early, and the days can be long. But at the same time, it is a profession filled with responsibility, freedom, variety, and experiences you simply do not get in many other jobs.

For people who enjoy being active, working independently, and seeing something different every day, distribution transport can be an incredibly rewarding career.
