The truck driving bans in Belgium do not apply to smaller trucks of standard dimensions, but cover oversize transport and heavy vehicles (>7.5t GVW). And it is these vehicles that we focus on in this article.

Driving bans for trucks in Belgium (oversize transport and GVW > 7.5t)

In Belgium, the specification of vehicles with oversized dimensions and loads is defined by the following values:

  • Length: for a single vehicle 12 m, tractor + trailer 16,5 m and truck + trailer 18,75 m
  • Width: 2,55 m
  • Height: 4.00 m
  • Weight: 44 t for 5-axle combinations
  • Rear overhang: 3.00 m

If a truck or its load exceeds any of the limits, you must comply with the driving prohibitions listed below or obtain an exceptional passage permit.

Ban on truck traffic on public holidays in Belgium

On motorways, the public holiday truck traffic bans apply from 16:00 the day before the holiday until 9:00 the following day, while on other roads they apply from 16:00 the day before until 6:00 the following day.

Truck traffic bans for exceptional transport apply on these public holidays in Belgium:

  • 1 January - New Year's Day
  • Easter
  • 1 May - Labour Day
  • Ascension Day
  • Whit Monday
  • 21 July - Belgium National Holiday
  • 15 August - Ascension Day
  • 1 November - All Saints' Day
  • 11 November - Armistice Anniversary 1918
  • 25 December - Christmas

Weather bans for truck traffic in Belgium

In order to keep the roads safe for all road users, several truck bans have been introduced in the event of worse weather conditions:

  • Prohibition of haulage on snowy and icy roads and in conditions of glare
  • Prohibition of transport due to fog, when visibility is less than 200 metres
  • Ban on overtaking on motorways and motorways during heavy rain or snowfall

Weekend driving bans

At weekends, a lot of passenger vehicles travel and move on the routes, so in order to minimise the risk of accidents, and to reduce exhaust emissions, restrictions have been introduced in Belgium for trucks with larger dimensions and loads: driving bans of a few hours and a few days at weekends.

Weekend driving bans are in force for exceptional transport:

  • From 6:00 on Saturday to 9:00 on Monday - on motorways
  • From 7:00 to 9:00 and from 16:00 to 18:00 - in Antwerp, Bruges, Brussels, Charleroi, Kortrijk, Ghent, Hasselt, Liège, Louvain, Mechelen, Mons, Namur, Oostende, Tournai and Verviers.
  • From 6:00 on Saturday to 6:00 on Monday - on the remaining roads

Ban on transport of dangerous goods in Belgium

The transport of dangerous goods is prohibited in certain areas of Belgium. This mainly applies to tunnels, city centres and high traffic roads.
